April 6-10 starts the spectacle known as the 2019 AORN Expo. Being one of the biggest surgical shows in the US, it is hardly a surprise that there is a lot of things to experience at this conference. So how do you get the most of it? Here are our tips to get the best experience possible when attending AORN this year.
1. Make a Game Plan
Did you know there are over 400 exhibitors at this years AORN Expo? Crazy right? It can also be a little overwhelming. So, to alleviate some of the anxiety caused by the overwhelming amount of options plan ahead! First, go through the list of exhibitors and pick out the ones you absolutely need to see. Then, download the show map and highlight them so you'll be able to find them more easily on show day. It can also be helpful to get there early, this will give you more freedom to move through the exhibitors.

2. Bring Questions
It isn't often you have so many thought leaders and experts at your fingertips. Take advantage of it! Go through the schedule of workshops and panels and find the ones that are best for you! After picking the best workshop fit, compile questions based on the knowledge you wish to obtain on the subject. Most panels and presentations allow time for questions, so ask some questions! It will help you get more out of the workshops and can help you generate ideas of your own. This still applies to the expo room floor. It isn't often that you have product experts ready to give you all the information you may ever need on the products you use every day. Come prepared! If there is a product that you want to know more about, the expo is the perfect opportunity to accomplish that. Take some time to go through the exhibitors, and if there is a product you have questions about compile those questions beforehand and bring them with you.
3. Make Connections
"It's great to spend time at a networking event with someone you know and like. But that's not what you're there for. Your goal is to expand your network by meeting new people." - Beth Ramsay
Building your network is a great way to meet new friends in the healthcare industry. We all know it isn't easy being in this business and having friends to talk to that fully understand it can be beneficial. So, it may serve you well to break off from the group and to meet new people. Meeting new people is a great way to see things from a different perspective and to learn new ways of doing things you may have never thought of otherwise. It also gives you the chance to make life-long friendships with people that have a similar day - to - day life. There are plenty of networking events to check out. If you are a first time attendee, check out the First Time Attendee Orientations and Meet Ups , these meet ups are a great way to get to meet new people and learn more about the conference. If you are interested in growing your global network, consider attending the Global Networking Luncheon on Saturday from 11:15am–1:15pm.
4. Come Ready to Learn
There are over 200 educational experiences available at AORN this year. In order to get the most out of the show, you have to come ready to learn. So, do your research. Before attending the show be sure to go through and read about each workshop. On the website, each experience provides you with the general purpose/ idea they will be presenting. Use this information to do your own research and come prepared for the speaker. Also, don't be afraid to compile some notes while at the presentations. Each presentation is designed to further your education and to help improve your work processes. The information that they provide may be highly beneficial down the road and worth having on record. Some of this year's hot button topics include, overcoming barriers to teamwork simulation training, what's new at the Joint Commission?, and Preoperative Nursing: Dispelling Myths and Sharing A Tradition of Excellence. Also be sure to check out the poster presentations that happen periodically over the conference.
5. Enjoy the City
You are in the country music capital of the world! Have some fun! The AORN website gives you a link to everything happening in the music city. Before you head to the conference, see what you might want to do during your downtime . There are plenty of options at varying prices, and not all of them revolve around country music. For example, a fan of ancient Greek mythology might want to check out the full- scale replica of The Parthenon. Though you won't find anyone praying to the goddess Athena here, you'll find the largest indoor sculpture in the western world, a museum, and an array of sculptures and art galleries. If you're an Elvis fan,the tour of music row will take you to a recording studio used by the king himself. There are also many free options to consider if you don't want to spend extra money. So come prepared, do your research before you get into the city. It will be worth it in the end. Be sure to check out the official Nashville visitor's website for more information.
